Tree House Humane Society: Recent Adoptions [Jan. 6th, 2010|06:31 pm]

Of the cats I know pretty well, Teppic, Wild Bill, Kerry King, Tamiami and Cheever were each recently adopted. I've written about Tepp and Bill, but not Tamiami and Cheever.

Cheever was one of the cats who loves to play, hogs the toys, but wasn't too keen on being close to people. My last visit with him, we played a lot and he let me pet him. I was thrilled!

Now that Cheever has a home, Robin Lane gets to play more. But she still needs a good friend since De Rosa was adopted.

Sweet little Cheever, monopolizing a toy, as ever

"Lost" Vs "Tom Sawyer": Huh? [Jan. 6th, 2010|06:00 pm]

Well, I think this is silly. In the first place, I grew up going to Disneyland and I still like it just fine. Perhaps I'm not as into it as some adults are, but I have enjoyed days at Dland as a grown-up. It's also true that I read "Tom Sawyer" in elementary school, and maybe it's not on anyone's curriculum these days. But my issue with changing Dland's "Tom Sawyer's Island" into a "Lost" island is that "Lost" is definitely adult fare. Is there anything at Dland that is adult-only oriented or 14-and-over? This article makes a good point in that the island concept may be in need of serious updating (it's combined with pirates now, for some reason, which makes no sense Sawyer-wise) but, as much as I enjoy "Lost", I see no point in Dland creating an island "adventure" based on, let's face it, the complete weirdness that is this series' modus operandi.

[info]blergeatkitty  asks, basically, what sandwich would you be?

And now I need to know about you-all.

I'm definitely some sort of BLT. The bacon is applewood, thick and peppered. The lettuce is fresh spinach. The tomato is heirloom, like my grandma used to grow. It's dressed with avocado and a nice aoli on soft sourdough bread. A little green salad with arugula, romaine, red onion and gorgonzola is on the side dressed with balsamic vinaigrette.

Now I need to go to the grocery store.

Christmastime Pictures, NYC III [Jan. 5th, 2010|07:23 am]

St Patrick's Cathedral, NYC. I've been many times but I've only been inside on two occasions. My mother scoffed at Mary. Where does someone, especially a woman, get the nerve to dis centuries of goddesshood? Well, that's me mum for ya. Personally, Marys of all types and cultures have made their way into my life and I'm thankful for them.

The first photo is from Curator magazine. I used to do a collage-like pictorial of the cathedral, David Hockney-style, but I've never taken a good shot of the whole front in one picture.

Over the Holidays [Jan. 5th, 2010|06:42 am]

At LaGuardia airport waiting to fly home to Chicago, a family of four sat near me. They played 20 questions. The older brother, around 11, was bright and forthright, a bit bossy but clearly stretching his boundaries. The younger brother, around 8, was the underdog, sweet and uncomplicated. The parents were attentive, directive, informative, playful. Nearby, there was a poster blaring at me. All I could think was, my family never got the memo.

Depression is truly a time of self-involvement and diving into pitiful places. No matter how aware I am of it, I can't seem to stop it from flooding me.

TV: Black Books [Jan. 5th, 2010|04:51 am]

Sooo, in Season 2, Episode 3 of "Black Books" I was a bit confused as to why Fran was looking for a job as she owned a gift shop of sorts near the bookstore. Also, there suddenly were green curtains instead of a door between the bookstore and the living quarters of Bernard and Manny. I thought I must have missed something.

Then in Episode 4, Fran actually states that she misses the shop and Bernard counters that she hated it. The curtains, I fear, will never be explained. *snort*

Often when watching a TV program, I'm surprised by some stupid plot hole or unfathomable action by a character and have to remind myself that there would BE no program without these things. But this kind of inconsistency is madding on another level entirely. ...I'm joking. How can you tell that I'm joking if I don't use emoticons or say *snort*? *sigh*

Strings
by Ruth Stone

We pop into life the way
Particles pop in and out
Of the continuum.
We are a seething mass
Of probability.
And probably I love you.
The evil of larva
And the evil of stars
Is a formula for the future.
Some bodies can
Thrust their arms into
a flame and be instantly
cured of this world,
while others sicken.
Why think, little brother
Like the moon, spit out like
A broken tooth.
"Oh," groans the world.
The outer planets,
The fizzing sun, here we come
With our luggage.
Look at the clever things
We have made out of
A few building blocks—
O, fabulous continuum.

Small Revolvers [Jan. 4th, 2010|10:37 am]

I like revolvers. They're simple and free from all the annoyances of semi-automatics - jamming, mechanical SNAFU's, etc. I don't own any myself (yet) so every once in a while I like to rent them at the local range. In the Concealed Carry world, the small, 5-shot pocket revolver holds a lot of merit so this weekend I tried out two lightweight revolvers that are chambered to shoot .38 special.

First was the Smith & Wesson 642, followed by the new Ruger LCR. These both share a few advantages - they're SMALL (you can drop them in your pocket and nobody will notice unless they frisk you). They're both chambered in .38 Special, a respectable ammunition that comes in a wide variety of self-defense loads. And they're both lightweight, making it really easy to carry. The Smith & Wesson airweight line have aluminum frames while the Ruger LCR is the first polymer framed revolver.

My impressions.... OUCH! These are not fun guns to shoot, not for long periods of time. Even in .38 special they have quite a kick. Anyone who buys a Smith & Wesson should consider aftermarket Hogue grips (a bit thicker, making it easier to take the recoil), or better yet the Crimson Trace laser grips (also larger). The Ruger LCR already has a fairly cushioned grip, but it's a bit larger overall than the Smith and Wessons. After 100 rounds I was thoroughly done for the day. But these are intended for short range, lightweight carry pieces and in that regard they're excellent. Personally, however, I prefer to shoot my trusty Walther PPK/S.

I have shot the insanely lightweight Scandium versions by Smith & Wesson, and I've shot them in the more powerful .357 loads. And truly this is an insane combination - I recall walking away after one shot with an imprint of the grip in my hand.

TV [Jan. 4th, 2010|12:07 am]

As we have gone over many times of late, I am in a phase of my life where distracting myself from an onslaught of overwhelming, uncontrollable thinking is key. It's key because I can't do anything about most of what ravages my mind at the moment. So, I've been trying to read (difficult to concentrate as my mind opens up and spills MY thoughts out amongst the words I'm trying to read) and watching way too much television. TV is blissfully easy as I turn on a relaxed mode, still aware but not too aware.

Mostly, I watch TV online because I'm playing catch-up with some shows. For instance, I had never watched "Lost" and I know that it's returning this month, so I watched all of the previous seasons online so I can enjoy the final season on TV.

Recently, I viewed all seasons of "Ugly Betty", a show I never got into on TV. I like the bright colors and some of the actors and the over-the-top soap opera-type scripts make me laugh. I just noticed last night that I've been watching programs beginning with "B", which is weird. Well, okay, "Ugly Betty" doesn't really begin with a "B", but I have the show listed as "Betty" on my sheet-of-what-season-and-episode-I'm-on. "Betty" is now crossed out as I'm all caught up. Beneath that are listed: "Better Off Ted", "Being Human", "Big Bang"[sic], "Breaking Bad" and "Black Books." I've seen most of "Being Human" and "Breaking Bad", but there is still a catch-up need. I just thought it was strange how all of the programs I'm currently viewing old episodes of are "B" words. *snort*

...Huh. Turns out I've seen all of "Breaking Bad." Weird.

I haven't seen much of the 10th doctor, nor Torchwood. But Christ, that was the longest death, ever. It was also an incredibly ridiculous plot... even for Dr Who. Lame lame lame!

Timothy Dalton as Rassilon was kinda cool -- Assuming that's the original Rassilon.

I *was* touched to see Sarah Jane Smith, however.
